7 Warning Signs Your Tree Needs to Come Down (Walhalla, SC Edition)

May 8, 2026 6 min read

Trees in the South Carolina lowcountry deal with a lot — hurricane winds, soggy soil, fungal pressure, and the occasional ice storm. Most of the time they bounce back. But sometimes a tree quietly turns into a hazard, and the only person who notices is the arborist who eventually takes it down.

If you live in Walhalla, South Carolina or anywhere across the Upstate South Carolina, here are the seven warning signs we tell every homeowner to watch for.

1. Mushrooms or conks at the base

Shelf-like fungi (especially Ganoderma) at the base of an oak or pine almost always means internal decay. The tree may look fine on top, but the structural wood inside is being eaten away.

2. Large, sudden cracks in the trunk

A vertical crack more than a few inches deep — particularly one that opens further after a storm — is a sign the tree is failing internally. Don't wait.

3. Leaning that wasn't there last year

Trees naturally lean a bit. A new lean, especially after heavy rain or wind, usually means root failure. In our sandy lowcountry soil, root failure can happen fast.

4. Dead branches in the upper canopy

When the top of a tree starts dying off, it's often a signal that the root system can no longer support the canopy. This is called "crown dieback" and it tends to accelerate.

5. Hollow trunks

You can sometimes hear it by tapping with a mallet — a deep, drum-like sound. A hollow tree isn't automatically dangerous, but combined with any other sign on this list, it's a red flag.

6. Roots lifting the soil

If you're seeing the soil "mound up" on one side of the trunk, that's the root plate beginning to lift. It's one of the strongest predictors of catastrophic failure.

7. Storm-damaged limbs left untreated

Hurricane and thunderstorm damage that's been sitting unaddressed creates entry points for decay. A clean professional cut now prevents a major removal later.
